Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a move signaling deepening economic ties, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga recently visited AMG Holdings, one of the country’s leading diversified industrial groups. The visit focused on AMG’s significant contributions to the manufacturing sector, export growth, and job creation, and explored new avenues for U.S.-Ethiopia commercial partnerships .
Ambassador Massinga’s tour of AMG Holdings highlights the U.S. government's growing interest in Ethiopia's private sector as a driver of economic transformation. During the visit, the Ambassador learned about AMG's extensive operations, which include a network of over 114 petroleum stations and a major industrial park development in Gelan town, Oromia State .
The visit comes at a time when AMG Holdings is scaling up its industrial footprint. The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with seven international partners from China and India to develop a new industrial park. This initiative is set to boost import substitution, promote exports, and facilitate technology transfer across key sectors, including metal, construction materials, chemicals, automotive, and coffee processing .

Discussions during the visit highlighted the potential for stronger U.S.-Ethiopia commercial partnerships and increased private-sector investment. This aligns with the broader strategic shift in U.S. policy, moving from an aid-based approach to a trade and investment-focused partnership, a priority emphasized by Ambassador Massinga .
AMG Holdings has already demonstrated its economic impact, having created approximately 2,500 permanent and temporary jobs for Ethiopians. The company's leadership expressed optimism about future growth and its capacity to contribute to Ethiopia’s industrialization agenda .
The Ambassador’s engagement with AMG follows other high-level bilateral meetings focused on economic cooperation. Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, has held productive discussions with U.S. officials, including Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, on macroeconomic reforms and investment opportunities. These talks have paved the way for U.S. financial institutions to consider support for major infrastructure projects, such as the new Bishoftu International Airport, which is expected to unlock trade and position Ethiopia as a premier logistics hub .
The visit to AMG Holdings is a testament to the growing synergy between Ethiopian industrial ambition and U.S. commercial interests, creating a foundation for mutual economic benefit and sustainable development in the region.
